Improve ColorNow Colour Matching

ColorNow is a on the spot colour matching app designed for sales representatives to use with customers. Joined after MVP was launched in APAC, I lead research and design effort, including reshaping brand identity, conducting usability study and devising interaction strategy. Design and service optimization reduce users’ effort and pushback in adopting digital colour matching process.

Role: Product Designer, UX Researcher
Year: 2019 - 2021

Our main challenge is low adoption rate

Six months after MVP was launched, the adoption remains low. I conducted usability testing with sales from 🇸🇬 Singapore, 🇲🇾 Malaysia, 🇻🇳 Vietnam, 🇹🇭 Thailand and 🇮🇩 Indonesia to find out why.

Top issue 1: No experience with iPad

I compile a list of tips and tricks to onboard sales to iPad. This document is also used as part of sales ColorNow onboarding training.
Solution: iPad tips and tricks deck
Learn: I lear
n that product interface might not always be the one causing usability issues.

Top issue 2: Colour matching by adjusting L*a*b* is difficult

To match the target colour given by customers, sales reps spent huge amount of time in front of customers, that previously they do not, adjusting l*a*b* value to get customers' approval.

MVP design

Solution: Instead of adjusting colour value, display all available MB colours directly on screen for users to match and pick.

Attempt 1
︎ Gradient Effect
This can be solved by introducing white space between solid colours.
︎ No colour preview
Introduce colour preview panel on the right screen.

Attempt 2
︎ 7x7 Grid
7x7 grid offers more colour choices in one screen.

Success Metrics

100% Easy to Use

All sales reps say new design is easier to use. This interface increases sales’ confident level. Customers are also more agreeable to do colour matching together on the spot.

︎︎︎% Adoption Rate

Initially, I wanted to measure adoption rate as success metrics. But as this is launched during Covid-19 pandemic, sales do not get the chance to use it with customers. During the lockdown period, we also continue launched multiple new features. So eventhough adoption increased, it is difficult to say if the increased in adoption is solely because of the new colour matching interface.

What’s next?

Most requested feature: PANTONE colour matching system

Research reveals PANTONE is highly requested and greatly reduces both sales rep and customers’ colour matching effort. Because of this, PANTONE is prioritized for development.

︎ Grid View
Sales who use PANTONE usually already know the colour code they want. Grid layout takes extra effort to see or search PANTONE code.

New Feature: List View
︎ List View
Added list view for faster matching.
