Redesign Discovery Centre Experience

Redesign discovery centre experience to showcase the unique and complex ecosystem of Langkawi Mangrove Forests. I work closely with Four Season Resort Langkawi's chief naturalist on the content of the display.

Our main challenge is the huge amount of dry and heavy topics

Use infographics to explain complex information

Break down content into bite-sized

Slip in fun-facts between heavy topics

Service Safari: Best way to understand is to experience it myself

New to the world of Mangrove and Geopark, I joined Mangrove Tour, the tour that the resort guests will experience, with resort’s chief naturalist. This trip quickly let the team understand the magnitude of knowledge that we can share. A lot of the explanation during the tour ended up being featured in the centre.

Story-telling through space planning

Existing content was divided and grouped into five topics: Mangroves, Birds, Rainforest, Geology and Geopark.

The new gallery space is divided into two main areas: A-right and B-left. Related topics are grouped together, A: Geology, Geopark and Rainforest, B: Magroves and Birds. This ensures whichever side guests visit first, the story flow is not broken.

Graphic posters with colourful illustrations

Majority of the effort went into further research to understand how to break down the content and what kind of fun-facts to add in. Colourful illustrations were used to attract attention. Big texts were designed for scanning. Small texts for details.

Design trade-offs and consideration

The lowest and highest point of the graphic posters were optimized for reading. Unfortunately, some sacrifice has to be made due to space constraint. Posters have to be positioned both higher and lower than the comfortable reading range. To tackle this, big texts and images were used prominently for graphics that were positioned on top and bottom.

Mimic bird watching experience with hanging panels

More than 200 bird species living in Langkawi. To mimic the experience of bird watching, we hang birds’ photos on the ceiling. Panels' distance was carefully calculated for walking space.

My first iOS app: Geo Quiz

As part of the resort’s digital initiative, a simple app for kids was developed. To reduce development time and cost, I work closely with the developers and agree on one fixed template to fit the design.

Result
︎︎︎Increased footfall and social media exposure

Guests from all over the world, and as young as 2 years old, have been leaving drawings and memos at Memo Wall. The resort saw a noticeable increase in guests' engagement with the program. This further strengthen the resort's unique identity: a resort nestled within Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark.
